Trip to the Washington Square Arch and Washington Square Park

My trip to New York City over the summer provided me with many wonderful opportunities to visit historical sites, including the Washington Square Arch, located at the southern end of 5th Avenue. In 1889, philanthropist William Rhinelander Stewart erected an temporary triumph arc, celebrating the centennial of the inauguration of George Washington as the first president. Little did he know that the arch would ring out so much to the patriotism of the public that it gained so much popularity that in three years time, a permanent arch contracted of marble would replace Stewart’s arch.

Initially, I thought that the Arch stood in memory of George Washington and his impact in war, politics, and the establishment of the United States as a country; however, my visit to the arch provided me with new insight towards the memorial of George Washington. The arch and what it celebrates resonates with the American Identity; the right to freedom of action and speech, as well as the celebration of liberty. The Arch stands not only in remembrance of George Washington, but also reflects upon his efforts and success in the American Revolution.

While exploring the in the heavily populated areas of the Washington Square Park, I had a question in my mind- Since the park was located in such a prominent location, was it also meant to represent the history of New York? New York City is one of the largest cities in the world, where many cultures from all over globe bring their own unique aspect to American culture. However, Walking around the park led me to the discover various different performers not only representing their culture and demonstrating their skills to make some money, but also the idea of an American dream, where the US is a land of opportunity for all.

Overall, visiting the Washington Square arch and park gave me insight towards the celebration of liberty in the US, as well as a unique glimpse of all the different cultures and skills accumulated through the American Dream in New York City.

  1. I liked how you approached your visit with a prediction concerning the main theme of the park, then corrected it during your visit.. I wonder if you could have included another question about the site.
